These images depict the fifth, sixth, and seventh scenes from a handscroll portraying the life of Confucius (孔子, BCE. 551‒479) in ten scenes. The fifth scene illustrates a meeting with the state of Qi (齊) and Qi’s courteous return of territory belonging to the state of Lu (魯) while Confucius was serving as a chief minister in Lu. Here, Confucius stands on stairs while scolding Duke Jing of Qi (齊景公) for playing the vulgar music of barbarians. The sixth scene describes an episode in which Confucius visits Laozi (老子) and asked him about the proprieties (禮). The seventh scene shows an episode in which Confucius walks away from a conversation with Duke Ling of Wei (衛靈公) when the duke pretends not to hear Confucius by gazing at wild geese flying by. These images are presumed to have been produced to educate a crown prince at the Joseon court. They are copies of the original paintings of Wang Zhenpeng (王振鵬) of the Yuan Dynasty by Kim Jin-yeo (金振汝, late 17th‒early 18th century) from Pyongyang in Joseon Dynasty.
