This white porcelain dish of the Chubu (or Shufu) type features a body covered with a soft, bluish-white opaque glaze with a spray of plum flowers brushed in red iron. Among the discoveries made at an underwater archaeological site off of Sinan were several Chubu dishes decorated with iron-red designs, such as the one shown here. The realistic brushstrokes of the plum spray painted on the inner surface of the dish lead experts to believe that it is among the pieces marking the transition from Chubu ware to blue-and-white ware.
