Tiger-shaped celadon chamber pots were very popular in China. This one takes the shape of a crouching tiger gazing upwards. The tiger’s roaring mouth forms the pot’s spout. Its hip is indented, powerfully indicating its intention to pounce. The tiger’s face on top of the spout is an extremely elaborate and realistic stamped shape. This beautiful work of art created between the late Western Jin Dynasty and the early Eastern Jin Dynasty is believed to have been imported to Baekje. It provides critical evidence of the exchanges that occurred between Baekje and the Southern Dynasties of China, as well as the relationship between the central government and local entities in Baekje.
