In this portrait, Yi San-hae is wearing an official hat, a belt, and a green ceremonial robe with a cloud design. A rank badge embroidered with a peony and pheasant design is attached to the front of the robe. The portrait follows the general style of the 19th century in that the shape is defined with the use of clear contour lines, detailed brushstrokes are applied for the facial expression, and official robe patterns, chiaroscuro, a flower patterned mat, and other typical elements are presented. It is thought that this portrait is a replica of one made earlier given that it also reflects the style of portraits of meritorious retainers made in the 17th century, which generally feature the robe, hat, and the embroidered rank badge attached to the front and back of the official robe.
