This rubbing was made from a stele (Treasure No. 158) for Master Bojo, a renowned monk of the Unified Silla period. The stele that was erected along with his stupa (Treasure No. 157) in 884, four years after his death, demonstrates the typical style of stone stelae built in the late 9th century, and mentions that Master Jiseon founded the Seon School of Gajisan and received support from King Heonan and other members of the Silla royalty. The record also shows that the Southern Seon (or Chan in Chinese) school was fiercely rejected by the Buddhist community of Silla when it was first introduced by a Buddhist monk named Doui in the early 9th century.
