The Chinese characters written at the top of this portrait state that the subject is Jeong Gyeong-sun (1721-1795, pen-name: Sujeongong), a civil official of the late Joseon period. The portrait was made in 1777 when Jeong was 57. It also contains words of praise composed by renowned men of letters, such as Kang Se-hwang and Jo Yun-hyeong. It was once mistaken for a portrait of Jo Yun-hyeong. The subject wears a black hood and a jade-colored robe, and his hands are hidden inside the sleeves. The articles written on the painting by people close to the subject give us an idea of how men of letters at that time viewed portraits.
