This portrait of Im Mae was painted by Han Jeong-rae in 1777. The short-legged desk in front of him clearly displays the wood grain and shows contrasts of light and dark. The books placed on the desk appear to be wider at the rear than at the front. With the subject seated behind a desk, this is an outstanding portrait for the time. Im Mae (1711-1779) shared friendship with the famous literati painter of Yi Insang (1710-1760) and Yi Yunyeong (1714-1759) by creating poems together. Clumsy and apparently arrogant. Narrow-minded but resolute. Lazy and scattered is close to actual appearance. If you ask what kind of man he is, he can be described as someone behind the times. Self-praise by Old man Bohwa, and calligraphy by Master Okguk.
