Different techniques for creating a crane design, a common decorative feature on inlaid celadon, can result in very different effects, as is the case with this prunus vase. The background was coated with a glaze containing iron and the design was carved out before white clay was applied with a paintbrush. The beauty of both the inlay technique and the paste-on-paste technique is apparent here, lending the vase a sense of movement and a more active feel.
