With the completion of Hoeamsa Temple in 1562, Queen Dowager Munjeong had fifty gold-powdered paintings and fifty colored paintings each of Sakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, and Bhaisajyaguru Buddha made as an an offering for her son King Myeongjong’s recovery from illness and the birth of a crown prince. This painting, one of the aforementioned Buddha portraits, displays the advanced quality of Buddhist paintings made during the mid-Joseon period.
