This painting by Yi Jing (1581-1674 or after), a court painter of the mid-Joseon period, depicts a Confucian scholar in a garden pavilion watching a flock of wild geese as they alight upon a sandy field. Originally made as part of a pair, with the other being a painting of a monk returning to his monastery, the work exploits both the compositional form established by An Gyeon and his followers during the early Joseon period and the brushstrokes of the Zhe school of China.
