This frontispiece for the Lotus Sutra (Volume 3) contains three illustrations on Buddhist subjects. The one on the right depicts Sakyamuni preaching to his followers, while the two on the left illustrate the legends introduced in the sutra. The illustration based on a legend in the “Chapter on Medicinal Herbs” depicts a dragon spewing water as it descends from the sky and a man in a straw rain cape hurrying into a cottage to escape this rain. Below it is an illustration about hunger and a feast described in the “Chapter on the Prophecy of Future Enlightenment.”
