This depiction of bamboo is said to have been painted by Jo Ik (1579-1655), a scholar and civil official from the mid-Joseon period. It uses color to realistically portray an upright bamboo culm. It seems to reveal Jo Ik’s personal character as a man devoted to his parents who did not mind abandoning postings as a government official in order to take care of his parents.
