Danballyeong Pass, meaning “a pass associated with having one’s hair cut like a Buddhist monk,” acquired its name because so many people determined to take monastic vows after visiting it. The pass was featured at the beginning of a tour of the Geumgangsan Mountain area, and a painting of the pass was contained in the first part of Jeong Seon’s Album of Paintings of Geumgangsan Mountain. Compared to his other true-view landscape paintings, this one omits a number of details.
