A funeral address composed by Yi Chae (1732-1815) for himself is presented here in seal script calligraphy by Yi Han-jin (1732-1815) on the upper-right of this portrait. The lower-left portion contains a eulogy written by Yu Han-jun (1760-1834) in the plain square style. The text in the upper-left section of the portrait was written by Kim Ri-do (pen-name: Songwon) in 1807 (the seventh year of King Sunjo’s reign). In this portrait Yi Chae looks straight ahead with a steady gaze, and his beard and moustache display a calm dignity. The robe appears comfortable, but without any sense of tense contrast with the rigid facial expression. It is regarded as a masterpiece of portraiture from the Joseon period.
