This painting by Yi Seong-gil (1562-?), a literati artist of the mid-Joseon period, shows the famous landscape of the Nine Scenic Views of Mount Wuyi in Fujian Province, China, as imagined by Yi. The scene of a winding river, rocky peaks soaring skywards one after another, and the tiny cottage between them represents the landscape of the utopian world aspired to by the literati class of Joseon, who were strongly influenced by the Neo-Confucian ideology established by Zhu Xi (1130-1200) and Yi Hwang (1501-1570).
