This painting depicts a dragon assuming a dynamic posture as it emerges from the mist clutching what appears to be a cintamani, a type of jewel from the Buddhist tradition that conveys power and is believed to fulfill wishes. This painting is one of 79 works (74 paintings and five calligraphy) found in an album titled Hwawon Byeoljip (“Special Edition of Court Paintings”), which is believed to have been compiled in the late Joseon period. This remarkably diverse album features artworks ranging from the late Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) to the 18th century, and includes various types of paintings such as landscape, flower-and-bird, genre, and legendary figures. Today, the bulk of the paintings from this album are considered to be masterpieces.
