In 1737, Yi In-sang and Im An-se (1691-?) traveled together to Mt. Geumgang Fifteen years later Yi made this painting as a gift for his companion. Although the site depicted actually exists, Yi did not attempt to capture it realistically. According to the inscription, Yi deliberately chose to use only dry brush strokes with no color because he was painting from a mental rather than a visual understanding of the scene. He was attempting to invoke his memory of the mountain and the feelings that he had experienced fifteen years before.
