In the upper-left of this painting, a quiet temple reveals itself on the side of a misty mountain. An old Buddhist monk with a cane walks toward the temple listening to the ringing of the evening bell, his movements and facial expressions laboriously drawn as if the monk were the painter himself. This is distinct from the expressions of figures in other paintings by the artist. In contrast to the misty horizontal clouds, the fir trees stand upright in a line to heighten the tension in the composition.
