A common subject for gosainmulhwa, a type of painting that portrays characters from famous stories or legendary events, was long a critical moment in a game of baduk (also known as go). However, following the work of the literati artist Jo Yeong-seok (1686–1761), the subject was commonly depicted in paintings of gatherings of scholars. This scene takes place on a summer afternoon. Chickens are pecking for food in the backyard and a game of baduk is being played in the shadow of a gnarled pine tree. The characters are fixated on the match. The sharp brushstrokes used for the pine trees, the natural and animated depiction of the characters, and the appropriate placement of the articles, such as the fan and shoes, shows the charm of genre paintings.
