During the Goryeo Dynasty, incense burners were mostly used by the Royal Court and Buddhist temples. The royal court of the Goryeo Dynasty used them for rituals and in their daily lives. Among the royal court incense burners, ding-shaped celadon ones were made under the influence of the Xuanhebogutu of Northern Song China. The people of the Goryeo Dynasty developed their own kind of ding-shaped celadon incense burners. Many celadon incense burners, which were used in daily lives of the royal court, were adorned with shapes of diverse animals including lion.

The types of Buddhist incense burners that were used during the Goryeo Dynasty included: fixed ones, ones with a long handle, and hanging ones. The people of Goryeo Dynasty made diverse incense burners, using either traditional skills or those adopted from neighboring countries. Their skills have been passed down to the Joseon Dynasty to create another kind of tradition.
