ㅇExhibited artifacts: 16 works and 55 related items, including Daedongnyeojido woodblocks (Treasure No. 1581)

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of “Daedongnyeojido”, the NMK will exhibit 16 works and 55 related items including “Daedongnyeojido” (owned by the NMK), the woodblocks (Treasure No. 1581) used to print this map, and “Cheonggudo” (owned by the Yeungnam University Central Library, Treasure No. 1594-2), which is one of the leading maps created by Kim Jeong-ho (1804?-1866?), a geographer and cartographer of Joseon. The exhibition will shed light on the development of traditional cartology of the latter period of the Joseon Dynasty by revisiting the map and geographical description research achievements of Kim Jeong-ho. The exhibition will introduce various maps that were drafted since the 17th century in connection with development of cartology of the latter half of the Joseon Dynasty. It will also showcase the wholly unfolded “Daedongnyeojido”, which includes 22 books.

In 1861, the 12th year of King Cheoljong’s rule, Kim Jeong-ho published “Daedongnyeojido” by compiling the traditions of Korean map production. Korea was divided into 22 strata, with each stratum spanning 120 ri (approximately 47.13km) north to south, and a map was created for each stratum, which was then made into a book. The book can be folded and unfolded in sections of 80 ri (approximately 31.42km) west to east, allowing for easy use of the map. When the 22 books are all unfolded and connected, they create a large map with a length of around 6.7m and width of around 3.8m. This map is so extremely detailed that it stands comparison to maps printed today. It is a practical map that was done with extreme consideration of user convenience.

Manuscript maps by their very nature were extremely labor-intensive, with the result that few could be made. Kim Jeong-ho created the “Daedongnyeojido” map using printing blocks. He did the engraving on the woodblocks himself. He corrected some errors found in the first printed books (1861) and issued a second edition of printed books (1864). Such efforts demonstrate his tremendous passion: Kim Jeong-ho strove to create a better map, even though the improvements may have only been slight.
