The National Museum of Korea (Director Kim Youngna) is presenting the special exhibition, “Pompeii: Culture of the Ancient Roman City” from December 9th, 2014. This ancient town has been continuously excavated since the 18th century, registered as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1997, and has gained global attention.
In this exhibition, the displayed artifacts will evoke the tragic moment when Mount Vesuvius erupted on August 24th in 79 CE, which vividly encapsulated the daily lives of Pompeii’s citizens. In particular, many bits of wall painting, various sculptures, and accessories will reveal their luxurious lives and the forensic terror of imminent death that engulfed the people of Pompeii.
What’s more are surviving pieces of 2,000 year-old hardened bread, kitchen utensils, and surgery tools that will astonish your eyes with their uncanny similarity with objects in use today.
