The National Museum of Korea is pleased to present Polish Art: An Enduring Spirit, a special exhibition co-organized by the National Museum of Korea, KBS, National Museum in Warsaw, and Adam Mickiewicz Institute(Culture.pl). To most Koreans, Poland is well-known as the homeland of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus who revolutionized scientific thought, as well as the poet of the piano, Frédéric Chopin. However, there have been few opportunities to illuminate the broader thousand years of the progression of Polish history and culture. In this overview of the history of Polish art from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, over 250 objects from a range of genres, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, craftworks and posters, will be displayed for the first time in Korea.
Located on the broad plains connecting Eastern and Western Europe, Poland has established a unique cultural tradition while embracing the diverse cultures of neighboring peoples. Once a power in central Europe, Poland vanished from the world map for over a century only to emerge as a fierce battlefield during both world wars.  Across a history riddled with wars and foreign invasions, Poland has maintained its national identity and culture. The precious cultural properties loaned by the National Museum in Warsaw and eighteen other institutes across Poland vividly bear witness to the turbulent history of the nation, and exemplify the spirit of Poland as it brilliantly endured centuries of turmoil. We hope that visitors come to feel the spiritual messages of Polish art.
