The National Museum of Korea presents a thematic exhibition, entitled Hamheung, the Hometown of Joseon Royal Family, in the Medieval and Early Modern History Gallery. Hamheung is a city located in North Korea renowned for its natural beauty, long history and sophisticated culture. It also has been the administrative center of Hamkyeong Province both in the past and the present.

Hamheung holds a particular historical significance. It is the hometown of the founder of the Joseon dynasty, Yi Seong-gye (posthumously titled Taejo r. 1392-1398), where he as well as his forefathers laid foundation for royal cause. Current exhibition demonstrated a chronological paradigm of Hamheung’s prestige as the hometown of the royal family that underwent different stages of appropriation and reception during Joseon. The exhibits, such as paintings, books, and prints, provide pivotal keywords for understanding the history of Hamheung since the foundation of the dynasty.

Being part of the Museum’s project to illuminate the culturally and historically important North Korean regions, the current exhibition offers the public with an invaluable opportunity to have greater interest in the cultural heritage of North Korea.
