This is a portrait of Jo Tae-eok, a royal envoy dispatched to Japan in 1711, painted by Kano Tsunenobu, an official painter belonging to the Edo Bakufu. He is wearing a blue ceremonial robe, and is seated on the floor with his hands together. The Chinese characters written on the bottom left state the painter’s name. This portrait provides important information regarding the relationship between Joseon and Japan at that time, as well as displaying the difference between portraits made in the two countries during the Joseon Period.
