This is a rubbed copy of the epitaph inscribed on the Chungju Goguryeo Monument. The exact date of the monument’s establishment is not known, but it is estimated to have been erected between 449 (the 37th year of King Jangsu’s reign) and 495 (the 4th year of King Munjamyeong’s reign) during the Three Kingdoms Period. It is the only monument associated with Goguryeo remaining on the Korean Peninsula. The contents of the monument provide ample information on the relationship between Goguryeo and Silla, as well as the political system of Goguryeo, including the names of eminent figures and government positions.
