This is a near square-shaped placenta tablet of Prince Hwasu, which was buried in 1519 (the 14th year of King Jungjong’s reign). During the Joseon Dynasty, a royal baby’s placenta was so greatly valued that it would be stored in a jar which would then be placed inside another larger jar. A placenta tablet inscribed with the time and date of a baby’s birth and the date of the tablet’s burial was also buried together with the placenta, and a headstone was erected above it. This relic is made of marble and bears the dates of the prince’s birth and the burial of the tablet written in the regular script.
