These paintings in eight separate panels, which originally formed a folding screen, illustrate legends about the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors (三皇五帝) and miraculous achievements of ancient sage kings. The panels depict, in order: Fuxi (伏羲氏) inventing the Eight Trigrams (八卦) for divination; Shennong (神農氏) opening the first market; the Battle of Zhuolu (涿鹿) fought by the Yellow Emperor (皇帝) against Chiyou (蚩尤); the peaceful reign of King Yao (堯); an elephant plowing a field for Shun (舜) after being moved by his devotion to his parents; Great Yu (大禹) controlling the waters; Emperor Gaozong of the Shang Dynasty (商高宗) appointing as chief minister Fuyue (傅說) he saw in a dream; and a king visiting a scholar in seclusion. These paintings are thought to have been created by a court painter of the Royal Academy of Painting (圖畫署, Dohwaseo) in the early nineteenth century.
