The Chinese characters written on the right side of this painting state that it is a portrait of Jang Yu, a high-ranking official of the mid-Joseon period. He is wearing an official hat, a belt, and a black ceremonial robe with a rank badge embroidered with a peony and silver pheasant design. It is thought that this portrait was painted earlier than the 17th century, judging from the depiction of the face and the use of three-dimensional effects.
