When Seo Hyeong-su (1749-1824), a civil official of the late Joseon period, set out to assume his new assignment as the Magistrate of Cheorong, King Jeongjo granted him this poem as a farewell gift. It is contained in the seventh volume of Hongjae jeonseo (Collected Poems of King Jeongjo). The top of this calligraphic work contains a note written by the king asking Seo to serve as a good local administrator, as well as a list of the king’s gifts (including four medicinal herbal preparations and thirty hand-held fans). It is written in regular script on red paper.
