Pottery of the Southern Region

The southern region comprises Korea’s southern inland areas and the coastal areas and islands of the South Sea and Jeju Island. This region witnessed the earliest appearance of pottery, which is Gosan-ri pottery (c. 8,000 BCE) from Jeju Island, characterized by the addition of plant stems to the base clay. Raised-design pottery, featuring decorative clay bands attached to the vessel surface (c. 6,000 BCE to 4,500 BCE), comb-pattern pottery decorated with large comb-shaped patterns (c. 3,500 BCE to 2,700 BCE), and double-rimmed pottery featuring clay bands attached to the vessel rims (c. 2,200 BCE to 1,500 BCE) were also used in this region.
