Phoenix-shaped Glass Vessel

This green glass jug, from the South Mound of Hwangnamdaechong Tomb in Gyeongju, takes the general shape of a phoenix, with the mouth representing the bird’s beak. The neck of the vessel is decorated with approximately ten parallel bands of cobalt blue. The gold thread that is wound around the handle is believed to have been added as a means of repair. Identified as a Roman glass object, this vessel is likely to have been transmitted to Silla via the Eurasian Steppes.
