Sculpture of Shakyamuni and Prabhutaratna Buddha Sitting Side by Side (Replica)

During its history, Balhae had five different capitals, the most important of which was Sanggyeong (present-day Ning’an, China). Interestingly, while most Balhae statues of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva have been found in the former area of Sanggyeong, excavations in Donggyeong (present-day Hunchun, China), another former Balhae capital, have uncovered many images of two seated Buddhas, such as this one. The two Buddhas—Shakyamuni and Prabhutaratna—are seated on a single pedestal in front of a double halo, flanked by a bodhisattva and a monk. The overall style is reminiscent of Goguryeo Buddhist statues, seemingly demonstrating that Balhae continued the Goguryeo tradition of worshipping these double Buddhas.
