Rain Gauge and Stone Pedestal

During the Joseon Dynasty, the central government sent a rain gauge to every provincial office, and ordered the local governors to regularly report data related to rainfall. This rain gauge is the only one that has survived from the period; it was produced in 1837 and installed in Gongju, where the Chungcheong Provincial Office was located. The stone stand is believed to have been produced during the reign of King Sejong, and it was originally positioned at the Gwansanggam Office, the Joseon royal research institute of astronomy, geography, calendar, and weather.
