Celadon Jar with Inlaid Peony Design

As ceramic production techniques advanced in the Goryeo period, celadon vessels came to be modeled after bronzeware, as exemplified by this two-handled jar. The robust form of the jar is well complemented by the large peony design that is inlaid on the front and back. The peony design is outstanding not only in terms of its size, but also because of the fact that it was done solely with the inlaid technique. The petals and leaves are inlaid with white and black clay, respectively, for a pleasant contrast. Also, the stamen, pistil, and petals are thinly outlined in black clay, making them stand out.
