Dish with Pomegranate, White porcelain with pomegranate painted in underglaze cobalt-blue

With the development of urban culture in the capital city of Hanyang (present-day Seoul), gardening became a popular leisure activity in the mid-eighteenth century. Pomegranate, the main motif of this dish, was a popular plant for bunjae (the art of growing small, ornamental potted plants through careful pruning), and was used as an auspicious symbol for fertility.
