Water dropper with Pine tree and Plum, White porcelain painted in underglaze cobalt-blue

The Three Friends of Winter (pine, bamboo, and plum) symbolized the dignity and virtue of a nobleman due to their resilience to harsh cold weather. It was a popular decorative motif in white porcelain with cobalt-blue underglaze designs. Pine trees and plum blossoms were often depicted together as a motif on writing accoutrements such as water droppers.
