Portrait of a Noblewoman

This is a representative example of a portrait sculpture of a Roman noblewoman with a high social status, who was likely a revered wife and mother. Signs of aging are visible around the eyes, mouth, and forehead, but they only enhance her digni!ed, even majestic appearance. Her hair is intricately braided and wrapped around her head like a turban, which was the fashion at the time, tracing back to
the imperial women of the Trajanic period (98-117 CE). The changing hairstyles are an essential marker for dating male and female portrait sculptures of the Roman Empire.
