In commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of Korean Museums, the National Museum
of Korea presents a special exhibition entitled 'Scence of Banquets and Ceremonies of
the Joseon Period'. This exhibition provides an opportunity to take a glimpse of various
reflections of the celebratory social gatherings in the traditional culture of Korea.

Customarily, when there was a memorable congratulatory event, the Koreans arranged a banquet to entertain the guests with utmost sincerity. It was a widespread practice in every social fabric of society. The Royal household and even the commoners alike held diverse forms of ceremonies, as evident especially in paintings and textual sources associated with the history and rituals. The records explicitly display the scenes of banquets where the participating guests are delightedly enjoying the drinks, dance and music, while the celebratory rituals are performed.

The function of a banquet, however, was not limited to simply providing a place for
entertainment. The gatherings also generated a harmonious atmosphere. Both the host
and guests, regardless of their social status and age, became one and readily shared their sentiments.

In this exhibition, the documentary paintings and writings that capture those essences of banquets in the Joseon period are presented-most representatively Royal Protocols. To recreate the spirit of the scene, the exhibits also include the reproductions of notable crafts appear in various visual records. I hope everyone takes this occasion to experience the excitement and the underlying significance of this ceremonial culture in the Joseon period.
