Buddhist arts in Japan has evolved into a wide variety of forms since the
sixth century. In the early years of its development, sculptures were produced
under the direct influence of models from China and Korea. However,
by the ninth century (during the Heian period), a distinctive Buddhist culture
had begun to develop in Japan. In particular, Esoteric Buddhism centering
around Mahavairocana Buddha and Pure Land Buddhism revolving around
Amitabha Buddha flourished. Moreover, the syncretism of Buddhism and
Shintoism, the indigenous religious beliefs of Japan, provides a distinct facet to
Japanese Buddhist culture unique compared to Chinese and Korean versions.

This exhibition presents Buddhist sculptures embodying the three
prominent features of Japanese Buddhist faith: the flourishing of Esoteric
Buddhism and Pure Land Buddhism and the syncretism between Buddhist
and Shinto beliefs.

Those sculptures are in the collection of Tokyo National
Museum. It is an outcome of the ongoing exchanges and partnership taking
place between National Museum of Korea and Tokyo National Museum.
