l Exhibition Introduction
This exhibition features French masterpieces from the late 19th-century Impressionists to the early 20th-century Modernists, collected by American banker Robert Lehman. The groundbreaking works that swept through France at the turn of the century captivated Robert Lehman, who recognized their bold departure from tradition.
What was once ridiculed—the vivid colors and distinctive brushwork that captured everyday life in the late 19th century—later inspired generations of artists and came to be celebrated as the very doorway to Modernism.
Featuring 81 paintings and drawings mostly from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Robert Lehman Collection, this exhibition invites you to experience both the artists’ new ways of seeing and the passion of a collector who preserved them.
From Impressionism to Early Modernism, step into the stories of those who captured light and reshaped the course of art.
