The Gyujanggak was built in the rear garden of Changdeokgung Palace by King Jeongjo in 1776 as a space for storing the handwritings of the deceased King Yeongjo, his grandfather. The Gyujangjak is depicted at the center of this painting, and looks larger than it was in reality; its ancillary buildings and surroundings are also portrayed. The work was painted by Kim Hong-do, a renowned artist of the Joseon Dynasty, when he was 31, and exhibits the style of landscape paintings he produced in his early days.
