This certificate was issued to Kim Eung-su in recognition of his successful completion of the state military examination in the eighth lunar month of 1893 (the 30th year of King Gojong’s reign). This kind of document was usually called a hongpae, literally meaning “red certificate,” as it contained the owner’s name and score written in ink on red paper. Certificates such as this had been awarded since the Goryeo Period.
