The Chinese characters written on the sheet of paper attached to the left of the portrait tell us that the subject is Ju Se-bung, a man of letters of the mid-Joseon Period. Although Ju lived in the 16th century, the features in the portrait, such as the green ceremonial robe, official hat, and the mat covering the footrest, follow the style of the late Joseon Period.
