This painting portrays a gathering in which the participants wrote poetry and drank liquor at a pavilion in Kuaiji, Shanyin, China in the third lunar month of 353. A total of forty-one dignitaries, including Wang Xizhi (303-379 or 321-379), participated after performing a cleansing rite. The painter’s seal is stamped on the left of the painting along with information about the date and place of its production.
