In this portrait, Emperor Gojong (the 26th ruler of the Joseon Dynasty) is seated on a throne while wearing an ikseongwan (winged cap) and a gollyongpo (royal robe). The portrait was painted by Chae Yong-sin, who was active from the end of Joseon Dynasty to the modern period. Traditionally, royal portraits were painted in the royal presence and enshrined in a special hall. However, Chae created a large number of other portraits of Emperor Gojong based on a first example painted in the presence of the Emperor. This meant that portraits of Emperor Gojong could be publicly displayed to allow many people to gain a glimpse of the king, albeit indirectly.
