The slope near the lid of this early example of inlaid celadon was applied using a semi-relief technique. The side of its body is incised with vertical lines to form a petal shape. The top of the lid is inlaid with a thin layer of white clay with the contours, feathers and beak of a phoenix depicted in black slip inlaid on top. The phoenixes with winding necks on the left and right are symmetrical.
