This is a portrait of Hong Nak-seong, a civil minister from the late Joseon Dynasty. The outlines of the face, ears, eyes, mouth, and nose, and wrinkles were drawn in fine light brown brushstrokes and the Hunyeom technique was used to produce a three-dimensional effect. Areas around the eyebrows, nose, and cheeks were highlighted. The upper eyelids were stressed with a darker color and slightly shaded underneath. The eyebrows and beard were delicately drawn and shaded. Shading was done on the body. The patch worn at the breast shows two cranes and five-colored clouds on a purple cloud-patterned silk background.
