In Korea, the board game baduk, also known as go, was a favored subject only for paintings of famous historical or legendary episodes until a literati artist of the mid-Joseon period named Jo Yeong-seok (1686-1761) adopted it for his paintings of gatherings of contemporaneous Confucian scholars. In this work here, four men under a pine tree on a summer’s day are immersed in the game while chickens peck at the ground behind them. The sharp brush strokes used to depict the pine tree and the vivid portrayal of the human figures and their fans and shoes show the characteristically attractive features of genre painting.
