People Enjoying Spring under the Cherry Blossom
People are cherishing the spring that has come after a long winter under a cherry tree in full bloom. Outdoor genre paintings such as this—which depict people eating, drinking, and dancing in the open air—were actively produced between the 16th and 17th century, along with indoor genre paintings depicting indoor scenes of entertainment. These paintings, which put emphasis on the joy of the present life, mainly originated from monthly genre paintings that depicted a variety of annual events and later became the foundation for the emergence of ukiyo-e.
